QUESTIONS THAT WILL HELP YOU DIG DEEPER INTO THE MAIN MESSAGE FOR YOUR FAMILY DEVOTIONS OR SMALL GROUP:
Do you remember, as a kid, going to church and having a “Bible-Drill”? If not, here’s a reminder: The teacher would shout out a Bible verse address, and everyone would quickly try and find it in the Bible. Whoever found it first, would read it out loud. Today’s questions are a throw-back to those times!
Pastor Michael stated; “One another is two words in English, but it’s only one word in Greek: ἀλλήλων (ah-LAY-loan). It’s used 100 times in 94 New Testament verses. 47 of those verses give instructions to the church, and 60% of those instructions come from Paul.”
Unity. One third of the one-another commands deal with the unity of the church. Have different folks in your group take a few of the following verses and read them out loud, then answer this question as it pertains to the verse they just read; “Why is this absolutely necessary to the Christian life?” – Mark 9:50, John 6:43, Romans 12:16 & 15:5, Romans 15:7, 1 Corinthians 11:33, Galatians 5:15, Galatians 5:26, Ephesians 4:2, Ephesians 4:32, Colossians 3:13, 1 Thessalonians 5:15, James 4:11 & James 5:9, James 5:16
Love. One third of them instruct Christians to love one another. Have different folks in your group take a few of the following verses and read them out loud, then answer this question as it pertains to the verse they just read; “Why is this absolutely necessary to the Christian life?” – John 13:34, John 15:12, Romans 13:8, 1 Thessalonians 3:12 & 4:9, 1 Peter 1:22, I John 3:11, 1 John 4:7 & 11, 2 John 1:5, Galatians 5:13, Ephesians 4:2, 1 Peter 5:14, Romans 12:10
Humility. About 15% stress an attitude of humility and deference among believers. Have different folks in your group take a few of the following verses and read them out loud, then answer this question as it pertains to the verse they just read; “Why is this absolutely necessary to the Christian life?” – Romans 12:10, Philippians 2:3, John 13:14, Romans 12:16, Ephesians 5:21, 1 Peter 5:5
If there is time, there are so many more:
- Do not judge one another, and don’t put a stumbling block in a brother’s way (Ro 14:13)
- Greet one another with a kiss (Ro 16:16; 1 Co 16:20; 2 Co 13:12)
- Husbands and wives: don’t deprive one another of physical intimacy (1 Co 7:5)
- Bear one another’s burdens (Ga 6:2)
- Speak truth to one another (Ep 4:25)
- Don’t lie to one another (Co 3:9)
- Comfort one another concerning the resurrection (1 Th 4:18)
- Encourage and build up one another (1 Th 5:11)
- Stimulate one another to love and good deeds (He 10:24)
- Pray for one another (Jas 5:16)
- Be hospitable to one another (1 Pe 4:9)
Family Discussion Questions for the children’s message: “The Fiery Furnace”
Family Discussion Questions for “The Fiery Furnace”
Choose a volunteer to read aloud Daniel 3:17-18.
Ask the following questions and Lead your family to discuss:
- Do you think it was easy for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to decide to disobey the king? Why? Help kids realize that it would have been very hard to be the only ones disobeying the king’s command, but these men decided to follow God, even if it cost them their lives. Emphasize that the friends knew the trials they endured on earth were only temporary and that one day God would reward them for their faithfulness. (Option: Choose a volunteer to read James 1:12.)
- How can this story be an encouragement when we feel like we are the only ones obeying God? Point out that God was with the men when they chose to obey Him instead of the king. Lead kids to connect that through the Holy Spirit, God is also with us. (Option: Choose a volunteer to read Rom. 5:3-5.)
- What are some ways you can choose to obey God in your life? Take time to discuss. Explain that after Jesus’ death and resurrection, His followers continued telling others about Jesus. They were put on trial. Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, Jesus’ followers chose to obey God rather than people. (Option: Choose a volunteer to read Acts 5:29.)
